Franklin Expedition search: Ice dive team ready to discover more secrets of HMS Erebus

Nearly 170 years after the crushing forces of Arctic ice helped doom Sir John Franklin's quest for the Northwest Passage, there is more than a little irony in the fact that deep sea ice is about to provide new opportunities to delve into the mysteries of the expedition's fate.

Ice two metres thick will form the platform from which Parks Canada underwater archeologists and Royal Canadian Navy divers will launch an unprecedented exploration of the wreck of HMS Erebus this week.

The Nature of Things: Franklin's Lost Ships

This week's episode of The Nature of Things on Thursday at 8 p.m. on CBC-TV uses CGI, re-enactments and a good old-fashioned adventure yarn to lay out how Sir John Franklin's expedition became the worst disaster in polar exploration history. 

The ice dive comes seven months after the converted British bombing vessel that was one half of the Franklin Expedition was discovered remarkably intact at the bottom of Queen Maud Gulf off Nunavut.

"With ice cover, there will be no wave action," says Ryan Harris, a senior underwater archeologist for Parks Canada.

"Without the waves stirring up the seas, all the particulate settles down to the sea floor and it creates fairly ideal clarity conditions. It's almost like diving in an aquarium."

And that's particularly good for the new high-tech, 3D laser scanning tool that will be deployed as archeologists try to create the most detailed images possible of the wreck lying about 11 metres below the surface.

"We want to take advantage of the water clarity to do a very thorough baseline recording of the wreck site before any future interventions take place," says Harris.

Winter camping

The ice cover also provides a base for the camp that will house the 32 members of the combined Parks Canada and navy dive team who have trained together for the operation, becoming familiar with each other's equipment and techniques.

"This ice now is providing that stable platform where we can live," says navy Chief Petty Officer 2nd Class Larry Lyver.

"There's no up and down. There's no motion. Short of the confined space we're going through, this is the most stable and safe platform that we can use to conduct this operation."

Access to the wreck will come through three triangular holes bored through the ice — each side of each triangle will be about two metres long.

Needless to say, deciding where to drill those holes is key, and will be guided by sonar data already collected.

"We'll go back with survey grade GPS mapping equipment and we'll make sure we're putting these holes precisely where we want them," says Harris, noting the desire for accuracy so that access is as easy as possible for the divers and the umbilicals providing continuous air from the surface.

He's thinking of one hole on the port side of Erebus, another on starboard and one near the stern.

Plans at this point aim for 14-hour dive days — beginning around 8 a.m. and going until 10 p.m. over a 10-day period starting Thursday or Friday.

Chilly water

Two-person dive teams will be deployed in steady succession — each team will include one Parks Canada member and one navy member. The chilly –2 or –3 C water becomes a key factor determining how long divers stay down.

"We can be in the water for more than an hour; we're dressed for it," Marc-André Bernier, the head of the Parks Canada underwater archeology team, told a technical briefing last month.

During training over the past several months, Parks Canada divers more used to scuba gear familiarized themselves with the navy's ice diving equipment and strict safety protocols.

Navy divers, who are more familiar with underwater tasks such as mine countermeasures, routine and emergency underwater repairs and explosive ordnance disposal, learned about underwater archeology techniques.

"Our divers, they're great at working underwater, but we're going to a national historic site here, a very significant wreck that's been untouched primarily by anybody yet," says navy Lt. Greg Oikle, who is lead planner of the dive team.

"We wanted to make sure that our divers were prepared to go down and do the work that Parks Canada needs done without disturbing it."

As much as people are curious about what lies inside Erebus, Harris says it's important to get the baseline recording done before archeological efforts proceed more significantly and systematically into the ship's interior.

Peeking inside

Still, archeologists will be peering inside Erebus, which along with HMS Terror, was beset in ice in 1846 and abandoned two years later off the west side of King William Island, according to Inuit accounts.

"We'll definitely be exploring with what we call a POV camera … on a telescopic pole," says Harris.

"We're going to try to shimmy that [camera]

into some of the little nooks and crannies to try to peer below the height of the weather deck and perhaps even farther below that."

Harris says they are prepared for a "limited amount of artifact recovery."

The ice dive — done in conjunction with and support from the navy's annual northern sovereignty operation, Nunalivut — is in many ways an unprecedented partnership.

'Middle of nowhere'

It's also a logistical challenge, particularly given the remote — and undisclosed — location. Plans call for a C-130 Hercules transport aircraft and smaller Twin Otters to ferry all the equipment and people around.

"We're … in the middle of nowhere on this dive so if we don't bring things with us, we don't have them," says Lyver.

That means bringing everything from heaters, tents, water and food — individual meal packets like soldiers consume and which Oikle is not overly enthused about — to a decompression chamber and a doctor to ensure prompt care if a diving emergency arises.

As logistically challenging as the Erebus dive is, there is also a great sense of anticipation around it.

Jim Balsillie, former chairman and co-chief executive of BlackBerry-maker Research in Motion, who is involved in the Parks Canada-led search, will be at the dive camp for about five days as a guest.

"I'm very excited to get up there," says Balsillie, who along with Tim MacDonald founded the Arctic Research Foundation, which has supported the search for several years.

"I'm looking forward to seeing what they are going to bring up. I wonder if they're going to solve a couple riddles and mysteries and start a couple more while they're at it," Balsillie says.

Topping his list of potential finds would be a wax-sealed canister with documents in it, something he thinks is possible, given the disciplined code British naval officers had.

Answering the big questions

Oikle and Lyver are also enthused.

"To be able to come up here and be a part of this operation and explore and hopefully answer some of the questions that the world has been asking, it's truly significant for me, a pinnacle in my career really," says Lyver.

For Harris, who has recalled the "Stanley Cup" moment of first spotting Erebus on a sonar screen, the anticipation is long-term, and includes whatever the material remains left behind by the sailors can ultimately reveal about their experiences.

Who were the final survivors among Franklin's 128 crewmen? What were they trying to accomplish?

"Did they still maintain any hope of sailing this ship into the Beaufort Sea or were they more or less hunkered down and waiting for the end?" says Harris.

"And then there's a whole line of questions we need to explore with respect to the Inuit experience with this wreck site."

At this point, the answer to so many of those questions is simple: Who knows?

"The exciting thing about archeology comes in the surprises," says Harris.

"We can have a reconstruction of what happened but ultimately the archeology will inevitably present its particular surprises. It can be quite shocking when it does."

Large Hadron Collider starts up after 2-year shutdown

The world's biggest particle accelerator is back in action after a two-year shutdown and upgrade, embarking on a new mission that scientists hope could give them a look into the unseen dark universe.

Scientists at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, or CERN, on Sunday shot two particle beams through the Large Hadron Collider's 27-kilometre tunnel, beneath the Swiss-French border near Geneva.

CERN wrote on its website that "the startup is complete!"

The collider was instrumental in the discovery of the Higgs boson, a subatomic particle that had long been theorized but never confirmed until 2013.

Scientists are promising nearly twice the energy and more violent particle crashes this time around, starting as early as June. They hope for a first ever glimpse of dark matter, one of the chief focuses of the experiment.

Dark matter — and its cousin, dark energy — make up most of the universe, but scientists haven't been able to see them yet, so researchers are looking for them in high-energy crashes, in orbit in a special experiment on the international space station, and in a deep underground mine.

CERN spent about $150 million on the upgrade, opening the massive machine every 20 metres, checking magnets and improving connections.

"After two years of effort, the LHC is in great shape," said CERN director for accelerators and technology Frédérick Bordry.

"But the most important step is still to come when we increase the energy of the beams to new record levels," he said.

Nintendo wants huge cut of YouTube gaming stars' earnings

Nic Truong of Mississauga, Ont. has a dream job: he plays video games and posts clips of them on YouTube for his fans.

But now, Nintendo is asking YouTubers like Nic to hand over at least 40 per cent of their ad revenue for any video starring Mario or Link.

Truong, better known as TetraNinja, has built a following of more than 800,000 on YouTube by providing play-by-play commentary on video games. These clips are called "Let's Plays," and they're some of the most popular gaming-related videos on the internet.

Nintendo games hold a special place in Truong's heart.

"The original Legend of Zelda on the [Nintendo Entertainment System] was the very first video game I played," says Truong, who credits the popularity of his channel to his 2011 series of Let's Plays of Zelda: Skyward Sword.

Nintendo's 'Creators Program'

YouTube videos generate money for the uploaders in several ways, but most of them are tied to ads - either "pre-roll" ads that play before the clip, or banners that are superimposed on them. But a video creator needs to surpass a certain threshold before they get a cut of the ad revenue.

Several sources estimate that 1,000 views on a single video will generate around five dollars of ad revenue. Half of that goes to Google, and the rest goes to the creator.

Gamers like Truong, whose most popular videos have millions of views, are able to make full-time income from sharing their hobbies with their fans.

The gaming publishers have taken notice.

In 2013, Nintendo made sweeping copyright claims on videos on YouTube that included footage from their games.

"As part of our on-going push to ensure Nintendo content is shared across social media channels in an appropriate and safe way, we became a YouTube partner and as such in February 2013 we registered our copyright content in the YouTube database," Nintendo said in a statement in 2013.

The copyright claims meant that all ad revenue that previously would go to the creators of the individual videos went to Nintendo instead. It caused a significant backlash in the Let's Play community. Eventually, Nintendo dropped the claims.

The company's new initiative, unveiled in January, proposes to share the revenue for some videos.

YouTubers can apply to the Nintendo Creators Program and if an approved channel's video contains footage from a list of approved games, the revenue is split between the two parties – 40 per cent for Nintendo and 60 per cent for the creator.

If Nintendo chooses not to approve a video, then it can claim 100 per cent of the ad revenue, as it attempted to do in 2013. So far, it's not clear why some videos are approved and some are not.

Alternatively, gamers can register their entire YouTube channel with Nintendo, and increase their share of the revenue to 70 per cent.

Since Google already claims 50 per cent of the total ad revenue generated by videos, the creator and Nintendo's share would be divvied up from the remaining 50 per cent.

Nintendo of Canada did not respond to CBC requests for comment on its parent company's Creators Program.

 'A slap in the face' to gamers

Nintendo's recent move was a surprise to many gamers on YouTube, who see it as an attempt by a publisher to eat into their revenues and exert creative control over their content.

Felix "PewDiePie" Kjellberg, a Let's Player from Sweden who has more YouTube followers than anyone in the world, called Nintendo's new program "a slap in the face" of people making videos online. He argues he and other YouTubers already give games companies free advertising that targets an audience difficult to reach through traditional ads in magazines or television.

Other prominent gaming commentators, such as Jim Sterling, Jeff Gerstmann and Steven "Boogie" Williams, have echoed Kjellberg's opinion on the program.

Many gamers also say they aren't violating copyright, arguing their work is permitted by fair use provisions under copyright law.

Section 29 of Canada's Copyright Law states that fair use does not infringe on copyright if it's used for research, parody, satire, criticism or news reporting. That's why movie reviews can include short clips of the films being critiqued.

Elena Iosef, a Toronto lawyer who specializes in intellectual property, says Let's Plays likely won't infringe on copyright, in part because, unlike watching a copy of a film or television show, watching someone play a game is not a substitute for actually playing the game yourself.

"Someone watching a Let's Play is not going to go, 'Well I've watched it. I'm not going to buy the game now,'" she says. "If anything, it's going to make them more excited to buy the game, unless the game is completely awful."

Whether that argument holds up in court, however, is yet to be determined. No legal decisions involving video games and fair use have been made either in Canada or the U.S.

Long waits for approval

​Shortly after opening the Creator Program, Nintendo was flooded with applications. While they promised wait times of three business days for a reply, instead it turned into weeks without notice.

Some gamers, such as Truong, have decided it's not worth the wait. They'd rather avoid the process altogether, hoping Nintendo either doesn't notice them or doesn't take the time to claim their cut of the ad money.

"I have no doubt in my mind that I'll eventually have to submit individual videos to their program," says Truong.

​When that happens, Nintendo will get a lot of the ad money from his Zelda videos. But he can still count on revenue from his videos of games that are not made by Nintendo.

His biggest worry is that the Creators Program might set a precedent for other gaming companies to follow suit. The possibility of losing a large cut of the income from his entire library of videos – over 6,000 – is a much different proposition.

Because of this, he's considering moving full-time to the livestreaming channel Twitch instead, where gamers subsist primarily on direct donations from viewers and subscribers.

How urban soil farming could help feed more people

At a high school close to downtown Toronto, grade eleven student Deshanel Evans is getting back to the earth.

That is, he's making the stuff.

As a part-time job, Evans collects kitchen scraps from the school's culinary program and layers the carrot peelings and apple cores with leaves and other organic material in the bin. Evans then oversees the composting, turning the pile to aerate it and waiting as worms and bacteria transform the food scraps into nutrient-rich soil.


The Dirt on Soil is a one-hour holiday special that airs on local CBC Radio stations on Friday, April 3 at 5 p.m. ET and again on Monday, April 6 at noon.


"I feel good about my job," he said. "It's interesting to learn that the food we eat goes back into the soil and then we eat it again." Sometimes, Evans' friends even keep him company, because they like watching the transformation, he says.

This compost project — and the rooftop farm where the compost is used to grow vegetables — is part of a program called School Grown, a collaboration between the Toronto District School Board and a non-profit organization called FoodShare.

School Grown aims to use Eastdale's rooftop farm, as well as a market garden across town at Bendale Technical Institute, to help more people access fresh produce in the city while at the same time doing something positive for the urban environment — like making soil.

It's one of many efforts across Canada and the United States that are getting urbanites to think about soil — an issue that, up until recently, has largely been considered a rural concern.

Soil under threat

According to the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), much of our planet's soil is under threat from human activities, including farming and urban sprawl.

Already, 33 per cent of the world's soil has been degraded by erosion and pollution, among other pressures. The FAO warns that this is of concern to all of us, because the soil in which most of our food is grown is a non-renewable resource.

Considering that 95 per cent of what we eat needs healthy soil to grow, scientists say we need to pay closer attention to what's happening to it.

"We are utterly dependent on soil for our food supply," said Martin Entz, a professor in the department of Plant Science at the University of Manitoba, who spoke with CBC as part of a national radio special called The Dirt on Soil, which will air across the country this holiday weekend.

Not only do our food crops grow from the earth, but in order to for farmers to produce meat and dairy, livestock require forage, and are also fed grains such as corn and soy.

"I don't think it is a stretch to say that because our soil is threatened around the world, our survival depends on a better recognition of the role of soil in our lives," said Entz.

This is why the United Nations declared 2015 the International Year of the Soils.

Making soil in the city

Toronto's FoodShare is not alone in trying to make soil relevant to young city-dwellers, far from the farms that typically feed them.

In Milwaukee, the organization Growing Power is also working to make soil. As part of their urban agriculture program, they compost city food waste — including coffee grounds and by-products from breweries — and then use this soil to grow food.

"Last year, we collected 40 million pounds of carbon and nitrogen and turned that into thousands of yards of compost, because that is what is necessary to grow food in the city," said farmer Will Allen, founder and CEO of Growing Power, who won a so-called "genius" grant from the MacArthur Foundation for his work in urban agriculture.

"In the city where 75 per cent of the land is asphalt and concrete, you have to be able to grow on asphalt and concrete," he said.

Today, the organization has 300 acres of production and over 25 acres of greenhouse production, producing food from that compost to make sure the people in the communities they serve have equal access to fresh, healthy foods, no matter their economic status.

And it all starts with the earth.

"It's a rural issue. It's a suburban issue. It's an issue wherever you grow food," said Allen. "It's all about the soil."

3D printing helps give girl a new face

The great thing about medical school cadavers is that they can't die.

If a surgeon in training makes a mistake, there's always next time. It is the last environment where medical errors have no consequences. 

But 3D printing is changing that, giving even experienced operating room teams valuable practice on a model that looks and feels like the real thing. It has life-saving and life-altering implications.

Violet Pietrok was born two years ago with a rare deformity called a Tessier cleft. The bones that normally join to form the fetal face had not fused properly.

As a result, Violet's eyes were set so far apart, her vision was more like a bird's than a human's. She also had no cartilage in her nose.    

But the corrective operation is extraordinarily complex. So Violet's family turned to one of the world's leading reconstructive surgeons, Dr. John Meara, at Boston Children's Hospital.

He warned them of the danger of making sophisticated cuts through the skull, very close to the optic nerve. "They might be very close to the brain," Meara explained in an interview. "So the ability to make these cuts on the model first and see the trajectory of a sawblade or where that cut would come through in relationship to the eye is absolutely critical."

To get that model, the simulation team at Boston Children's took multiple MRIs of Violet's skull and replicated it on a 3D printer.

It took more than a day to print, but the model is exact. Even the density of the bone is precise.

 "We were actually able to do the procedure before going into the operating room," Meara said.

"So we made the cuts in the model, made the bony movements that we would be making in Violet's case and we identified some issues that we modified prior to going into the operating room, which saves time and means that you're not making some of these critical decisions in the operating room."

During the surgery earlier this year, Meara kept a model of Violet's skull close by and referred to it as he went through the complicated steps of the operation. This successful surgery was just the first of several that will be needed to remake Violet's face.

Other hospitals are interested

Boston's success has prompted a lot of calls from hospitals around the world looking to set up their own 3D printing simulations to Dr. Peter Weinstock, who runs the Boston program.

He equates medicine with sports teams. Any team worth its salt, he says, practises before the game.

"We looked at that and thought, why is health care not doing that?  If you can see the patient before you see the patient, if you can do the operation before you do the operation, you have the opportunity to tailor your approach, to tailor your team to the specific environment and event. Think about that opportunity."

Weinstock's printer now runs 24/7 preparing for procedures at Boston Children's — well worth the $400,000 investment. 

The models are game-changing — giving a whole new meaning to personalized medicine. With each new print, the models are getting more sophisticated. Soon, the replicated veins and arteries will bleed as they would in real-life. 

Boston Children's has also found better recovery times. Patients of surgeons who've practiced on the models typically leave hospital sooner and get back on their feet more easily.

Weinstock's simulation program began a few years ago with Surgical Sam, the world's first operable infant mannequin. Sam is becoming a bit outdated, but his beating heart and other lifelike organs keep him useful.

A model of an individual

But Weinstock wanted not just a model of generic human but one of a specific person.

That's also what Adam Stedman needed. Adam was born with arteriovenous malformation or AVM, a tangled mess of arteries and veins in the brain that restricts blood flow and prompts progressively worse seizures that can cause brain damage.

He could have had a stroke at any moment, or a hemorrhage, his mother Amy tearily explained. But surgically tackling the web of tubes inside Adam's brain was also potentially deadly, or it could leave him blind.

The 3D printer re-created Adam's brain — including the AVM — something his surgeon could hold, manipulate, examine, re-examine and ultimately, practice on. 

The surgery was a success — taking only a third of the expected time because the entire operating room team had done it before just hours earlier on the practice model.

When Adam came out of the OR, he smiled and his mother broke down. "He just has a blind spot," she said in an interview in her Connecticut home. To her, that's a big improvement.

"I honestly think that the 3D printing has the majority to do with that, as far as where they knew, where to cut and where not to."

Medieval potion kills modern-day superbugs

A medieval recipe found in a 1,000-year-old book can kill antibiotic-resistant superbugs that are hard to treat with modern medicine.

A recipe for the potion, originally an eye salve, was found in Bald's Leechbok, a 10th-century book of Anglo-Saxon medical advice and recipes for medicines, salves and treatments found in the British Library.

The recipe contains:

  • Garlic.
  • Onion or leek.
  • Wine.
  • Oxgall, bile from a cow's stomach.

When tested in mice on wounds infected with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), it performed at least as well as conventional antibiotics, reported scientists at the Annual Conference of the Society for General Microbiology this week in the United Kingdom.

"We were absolutely blown away by just how effective the combination of ingredients was," Freya Harrison, the University of Nottingham microbiologist who led the study, said in a statement.

The idea of testing the remedy came from historian Christina Lee, who knows Harrison through a book club at the university at which members read at old Anglo-Saxon textbooks together, said Steve Diggle. Diggle, an associate professor of microbiology, runs the lab where Harrison does her postdoctoral research.

The remedy proved effective at killing bacteria in a test tube, so the researchers decided to try it on MRSA biofilms –  tightly packed, sticky coatings of bacteria found all over surfaces in places like hospitals.

"The problem with biofilms is they're very, very resistant to antibiotics," Diggle told CBC's As It Happens.

But the potion killed the biofilms too.

"And that's when I started to think, 'Actually, this is quite good,'" Diggle recalled.

The recipe specifies that the ingredients must be brewed in a brass vessel, strained and then left to sit for nine days before use.

The researchers found  none of the individual ingredients alone had any measurable effect on MRSA, but the combination was highly effective.

"What we need to do with this recipe," Diggle said, "is really understand how it works now."

How urban soil farming could help feed more people

At a high school close to downtown Toronto, grade eleven student Deshanel Evans is getting back to the earth.

That is, he's making the stuff.

As a part-time job, Evans collects kitchen scraps from the school's culinary program and layers the carrot peelings and apple cores with leaves and other organic material in the bin. Evans then oversees the composting, turning the pile to aerate it and waiting as worms and bacteria transform the food scraps into nutrient-rich soil.


The Dirt on Soil is a one-hour holiday special that airs on local CBC Radio stations on Friday, April 3 at 5 p.m. ET and again on Monday, April 6 at noon.


"I feel good about my job," he said. "It's interesting to learn that the food we eat goes back into the soil and then we eat it again." Sometimes, Evans' friends even keep him company, because they like watching the transformation, he says.

This compost project — and the rooftop farm where the compost is used to grow vegetables — is part of a program called School Grown, a collaboration between the Toronto District School Board and a non-profit organization called FoodShare.

School Grown aims to use Eastdale's rooftop farm, as well as a market garden across town at Bendale Technical Institute, to help more people access fresh produce in the city while at the same time doing something positive for the urban environment — like making soil.

It's one of many efforts across Canada and the United States that are getting urbanites to think about soil — an issue that, up until recently, has largely been considered a rural concern.

Soil under threat

According to the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), much of our planet's soil is under threat from human activities, including farming and urban sprawl.

Already, 33 per cent of the world's soil has been degraded by erosion and pollution, among other pressures. The FAO warns that this is of concern to all of us, because the soil in which most of our food is grown is a non-renewable resource.

Considering that 95 per cent of what we eat needs healthy soil to grow, scientists say we need to pay closer attention to what's happening to it.

"We are utterly dependent on soil for our food supply," said Martin Entz, a professor in the department of Plant Science at the University of Manitoba, who spoke with CBC as part of a national radio special called The Dirt on Soil, which will air across the country this holiday weekend.

Not only do our food crops grow from the earth, but in order to for farmers to produce meat and dairy, livestock require forage, and are also fed grains such as corn and soy.

"I don't think it is a stretch to say that because our soil is threatened around the world, our survival depends on a better recognition of the role of soil in our lives," said Entz.

This is why the United Nations declared 2015 the International Year of the Soils.

Making soil in the city

Toronto's FoodShare is not alone in trying to make soil relevant to young city-dwellers, far from the farms that typically feed them.

In Milwaukee, the organization Growing Power is also working to make soil. As part of their urban agriculture program, they compost city food waste — including coffee grounds and by-products from breweries — and then use this soil to grow food.

"Last year, we collected 40 million pounds of carbon and nitrogen and turned that into thousands of yards of compost, because that is what is necessary to grow food in the city," said farmer Will Allen, founder and CEO of Growing Power, who won a so-called "genius" grant from the MacArthur Foundation for his work in urban agriculture.

"In the city where 75 per cent of the land is asphalt and concrete, you have to be able to grow on asphalt and concrete," he said.

Today, the organization has 300 acres of production and over 25 acres of greenhouse production, producing food from that compost to make sure the people in the communities they serve have equal access to fresh, healthy foods, no matter their economic status.

And it all starts with the earth.

"It's a rural issue. It's a suburban issue. It's an issue wherever you grow food," said Allen. "It's all about the soil."

3D printing helps give girl a new face

The great thing about medical school cadavers is that they can't die.

If a surgeon in training makes a mistake, there's always next time. It is the last environment where medical errors have no consequences. 

But 3D printing is changing that, giving even experienced operating room teams valuable practice on a model that looks and feels like the real thing. It has life-saving and life-altering implications.

Violet Pietrok was born two years ago with a rare deformity called a Tessier cleft. The bones that normally join to form the fetal face had not fused properly.

As a result, Violet's eyes were set so far apart, her vision was more like a bird's than a human's. She also had no cartilage in her nose.    

But the corrective operation is extraordinarily complex. So Violet's family turned to one of the world's leading reconstructive surgeons, Dr. John Meara, at Boston Children's Hospital.

He warned them of the danger of making sophisticated cuts through the skull, very close to the optic nerve. "They might be very close to the brain," Meara explained in an interview. "So the ability to make these cuts on the model first and see the trajectory of a sawblade or where that cut would come through in relationship to the eye is absolutely critical."

To get that model, the simulation team at Boston Children's took multiple MRIs of Violet's skull and replicated it on a 3D printer.

It took more than a day to print, but the model is exact. Even the density of the bone is precise.

 "We were actually able to do the procedure before going into the operating room," Meara said.

"So we made the cuts in the model, made the bony movements that we would be making in Violet's case and we identified some issues that we modified prior to going into the operating room, which saves time and means that you're not making some of these critical decisions in the operating room."

During the surgery earlier this year, Meara kept a model of Violet's skull close by and referred to it as he went through the complicated steps of the operation. This successful surgery was just the first of several that will be needed to remake Violet's face.

Other hospitals are interested

Boston's success has prompted a lot of calls from hospitals around the world looking to set up their own 3D printing simulations to Dr. Peter Weinstock, who runs the Boston program.

He equates medicine with sports teams. Any team worth its salt, he says, practises before the game.

"We looked at that and thought, why is health care not doing that?  If you can see the patient before you see the patient, if you can do the operation before you do the operation, you have the opportunity to tailor your approach, to tailor your team to the specific environment and event. Think about that opportunity."

Weinstock's printer now runs 24/7 preparing for procedures at Boston Children's — well worth the $400,000 investment. 

The models are game-changing — giving a whole new meaning to personalized medicine. With each new print, the models are getting more sophisticated. Soon, the replicated veins and arteries will bleed as they would in real-life. 

Boston Children's has also found better recovery times. Patients of surgeons who've practiced on the models typically leave hospital sooner and get back on their feet more easily.

Weinstock's simulation program began a few years ago with Surgical Sam, the world's first operable infant mannequin. Sam is becoming a bit outdated, but his beating heart and other lifelike organs keep him useful.

A model of an individual

But Weinstock wanted not just a model of generic human but one of a specific person.

That's also what Adam Stedman needed. Adam was born with arteriovenous malformation or AVM, a tangled mess of arteries and veins in the brain that restricts blood flow and prompts progressively worse seizures that can cause brain damage.

He could have had a stroke at any moment, or a hemorrhage, his mother Amy tearily explained. But surgical tackling the web of tubes inside Adam's brain was also potentially deadly, or it could leave him blind.

The 3D printer re-created Adam's brain — including the AVM — something his surgeon could hold, manipulate, examine, re-examine and ultimately, practice on. 

The surgery was a success — taking only a third of the expected time because the entire operating room team had done it before just hours earlier on the practice model.

When Adam came out of the OR, he smiled and his mother broke down. "He just has a blind spot," she said in an interview in her Connecticut home. To her, that's a big improvement.

"I honestly think that the 3D printing has the majority to do with that, as far as where they knew, where to cut and where not to."

Howling at the moon, and at scientific myths

The full moon this weekend will provide North America with a lunar eclipse and will likely lead some to believe that maternity wards will become busier. A new report shows they won't — baby booms are just one of the myths that have sprung up around lunar phases.

The eclipse will be visible across North America, as the moon passes through the shadow of the Earth, turning blood red in the process.

The effect is due to the alignment of the Earth, moon and sun and follows the recent total solar eclipse in the North Atlantic. No special equipment is needed to view the lunar eclipse; in fact, the naked eye is the best way to capture it.

Full moons are often blamed for a variety of human activities. A person whose behaviour is strange might be called a lunatic (from "luna", Latin for moon); wolves seem to howl by it; while some people apparently turn into wolves or vampires under full moonlight.

Then, there is the common urban myth that more babies are born during a full moon. But statistical studies have shown that this is not the case. 

Yet, the myth persists among well educated people. The author of the new study says this is a form of "confirmation bias," where we interpret information in a way that confirms our beliefs and ignore that which contradicts them. This keeps the myth alive, even though it goes against scientific evidence.

It is also dangerous.

Most of us are guilty of confirmation bias in some form or another. For instance, I'm obsessed with red lights in traffic. I never get green ones, no matter what speed I drive.

Of course, when I did keep track of traffic lights on a short trip across the city, the count came out to roughly 50- 50, with a slight red bias. But my sample size was relatively small. If I had kept track of the lights for a month, in other words, the bias would likely disappear.

But I haven't done that experiment, which is exactly the point. We don't bother to do the research. Plus, when we believe something to be true, we don't want to let go of that belief, especially when a lot of other people believe it as well.

Regarding the baby birth myth, the gravity of the moon, which does cause tides, has an insignificant effect on the human body. Gravitational pull depends on the mass and distance of the two objects. Our oceans are very massive, so they feel the tidal pull, but the human body is not.

The moon is also very far away. So, in fact, the gravity from the mass of the hospital building exerts a greater gravitational pull on a pregnant woman than that of the moon.  

On top of that, the tidal pull of the moon is strongest not just during the full moon - when the Earth, moon and sun are aligned - but it is also stronger during the new moon, when the moon is on the same side as the sun. But there are no stats to show more babies born then, either.

The danger of confirmation bias is when false beliefs lead to harmful effects. The recent outbreak of measles in the U.S. is believed to be based on the misconception that vaccinations are harmful. Beliefs about the alleged health or sexual benefits of rhino horn are driving those animals to extinction. The science of evolutionary biology is threatened by beliefs that the Earth is only 6,000 years old and Darwin was wrong about the evolution of life. And then there is the belief that human activity is not warming the atmosphere, which is stalling efforts to clean up our greenhouse gas emissions act.

Myths and legends are an important part of culture, a colourful way to teach lessons in morality. But when direct scientific evidence proves the contrary, we have to make a choice between what we believe in and what evidence tells us is the truth.
