The U.S. election reached far beyond the American borders to be the most talked-about event on social media this year.

On Twitter, more than 327,000 posts were recorded per minute at the peak of Election Night.

This photo posted on Barack Obama's Twitter account the moment the result was called was the most retweeted post of the year, having been reposted more than 800,000 times. It earned Twitter's "Golden Tweet" for 2012.

The presidential election was the also the event people on Facebook talked about the most.

The three televised presidential debates were among the most popular events for "live-tweeting," posting about an event at it was happening.

Quotes from the debates, such as Mitt Romney's "binders full of women" and Obama's "horses and bayonets" quickly gained meme status as the ideas were spread and remixed around the internet.

"Bid Bird," mentioned by Romney in the first debate in the context of cutting funding to PBS, also made Facebook's list of Top 10 memes for the year.

Hurricane Sandy

Superstorm Sandy hit the U.S. east coast in late October, knocking out power in 15 states and Washington, D.C., and causing an estimated $50 billion in damage.

Pictures posted on Twitter and Instagram of a collapsed roller coaster at a boardwalk amusement park in Seaside Height, N.J., became some of the most memorable images from the storm.

Astronaut Sunita Williams aboard the International Space Station posted a shot of Sandy on Twitter from orbit.

Many people used the hashtag #Frankenstorm for Sandy posts, the word coined by NOAA forecaster Jim Cisco to convey the joining together of the warm hurricane system with a cold winter storm from the north.

After the seriousness of the storm became apparent, most people abandoned "Frankenstorm" as too frivolous, the media dubbed Sandy a "Superstorm."

Urban Outfitters had on to #frankenstorm a little too long, as it turned out, and was one of many retailers that faced backlashes for advertising "Sandy sales" on Twitter.

NASA landed a car-sized robotic science laboratory on Mars this summer by lowering it on winches from a hovering sky crane. No big deal.
