Canadian actor William Shatner, best known as Star Trek's Captain Kirk, will hail the International Space Station and hold a video chat with Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield this morning.
Hadfield tweeted Thursday morning that the event hosted by the space station and streamed live online starting 10:30 a.m. ET will be a "real-life Star Trek episode." Video of Hadfield's end of the conversation will be available, along with audio of Shatner's conclusion to the talk.
Shatner first connected to Hadfield via Twitter on Jan. 3, asking, "Are you tweeting from space?"
Hadfield responded, "Yes, Standard Orbit, Captain. And we're detecting signs of life on the surface."
Shatner, a very active Twitter user, was careful not to stay up too late Wednesday night in preparation for the chat.
"OK gang!" he tweeted at 10:23 p.m. "Busy day tomorrow [Thursday] gotta make a long distance call in the morning. Night!"
Hadfield blasted off for the space station on Dec. 19 and will become the first Canadian to take over as its commander, in March. He is expected to return to Earth on May 14.
