Facebook Home has been touted as a mobile suite that "puts people before apps," but a new advertisement that many say glamorizes texting-and-dining has got critics asking which people the company values most.

The controversial video spot called "Dinner" revolves around a young womanusing her Facebook Home-equipped smartphone to catch upon the lives of her social networking contacts while eating with her family.

As an older relative drones on about the perils of purchasing cat food, the central character escapes boredom with the help of her Facebook Home phone.

With each flick of her finger, a new and exciting scene emerges before her eyes, drowning out her family's conversation; a drummer! ballerinas! snowball fights!

The ballerinas dancing on tables may be a metaphor, but as ReadWrite's Brian S. Hall notes, tongue firmly in cheek that "The message here is plain: your family is boring; really, really boring. Even when the family is seated around the dinner table, it's best if you pull out your phone and watch what all your cool friends are up to."

Robert Hof was similarly less than thrilled with the ad.

In a blog post for Forbes called "How Charming! New Facebook Home Ad Celebrates Being Rude At The Dinner Table" he admitted that while he likely doesn't fall withing the company's target demographic, "Facebook Home's ad folks may want to think deeper about messaging that's a little more inclusive, even of weird aunts who can't stop droning on about their cats."

Much of the response on social media platforms has been even less forgiving..

Am I the only one horrified that Facebook is advertising it's ok to be on your phone during family dinner or in bed with your lover?Hunter

@facebook to the people that pay for her phone and make her dinner, she could show a little respect...youtu.be/voWvqBsyYbEDan Lewis

The use of smartphones at the dinner table is more than a point of inter-generational contention between parents and their children, however.

Many adults have been expressing frustration towards their own peers for tuning them out in favour of the people inside their phone.

If you are coming out for a dinner while playing your smartphone. Then I will question you: where the hell is your manners and respect.lim

Others are just fine with the practice of surfing at the table however, praising mobile devices for helping them avoid boredom and awkwardness.
